Deputy Director of Music
Mr. John Cornhill is an independent music teacher who specialises
in School Band Programs. He offers his services to schools to set up
and train School Bands and give individual and group tuition to all
its members on all the primary instruments including percussion. He
also tutors privately, repairs wind instruments and sells wind, string
and percussion instruments.
He has recently graduated with a "Certificate In Music Education - Instrumental Music" from the University of Western Sydney. John has also successfully completed the conducting training course at the Jerry Nowak Conducting Summer School 2000.
He is a member of the Australian Band and Orchestra Director's Association and the Band Association of N.S.W.
His experience in music includes studying and playing band instruments for 47 years and training and conducting bands (junior and senior) for 34 years. He is currently the Deputy Director of Music to the Campbelltown Camden District Concert Band where he trains and conducts the junior training band and assists in conducting the senior band. In this band which has recently won the 1996 Australian Concert Band Championship and 1998 and 1999 N.S.W. Concert Band Championships, he has held the positions of principal trumpet, tuba, french horn and is presently their principal trombonist. Mr. Cornhill has also had extensive experience playing in theater pit orchestras, dance bands, Bavarian bands and symphony orchestras.
For the past 20 years he has been tutoring private students on Trumpet, Cornet, French Horn, Trombone, Baritone, Euphonium and Tuba for A.M.E.B. practical and musicianship examinations held at the Conservatorium Of Music Sydney and in that time has also tutored high school students for their H.S.C. practical music examinations.
Mr. Cornhill is a product of the first training band that was conducted by Mr. Harold Pollard (O.A.M.) for the Campbelltown Camden Brass Band in the 1950's and has remained a loyal member all that time. He has assisted Mr. Pollard (who still remains the band master), where ever he could to build the band to its present National Championship status.
For his dedication to banding and training of young band members, and also in his roll as project supervisor in the building of the new band training center in Campbelltown, Mr. Cornhill was awarded the prestigious "Band Member of the Year" for 1994 by the Band Association of N.S.W.
He has recently started Band programs in six primary schools in the Camden Campbelltown and Liverpool/Fairfield areas where Band programs had not existed before. Mr Cornhill is currently tutoring the following Band instruments at two high schools and eight primary schools :- Flute, Clarinet, Saxophone, Trumpet, French Horn, Alto Horn, Trombone, Baritone, Tuba, Bass Guitar, Percussion and Keyboard.
